GI Jews: How World War II Changed a Generation

Military service in World War II transformed a generation of American Jews, taking them out of familiar homes into the armed forces. Although they wore a uniform identical with their fellow soldiers, Jews experienced aspects of the war differently. This session explores some of those points of difference—in politics, religion, culture—and the relevance of antisemitism and the Judeo-Christian tradition in shaping a postwar world. It also looks at how Jews in uniform responded to the Holocaust.
