Contemporary Jewish arguments about the proper roles of Israel and the Diaspora often feel like a zero-sum game. Some dismiss Jewish life in the Diaspora as meaningless, while others champion a Diasporic theory of Jewish life that denies the age-old dream of returning to Zion. We will explore the 19th century Torah commentary Ha’amek Davar for an alternate theory of the Israel-Diaspora relationship as we try to determine its usefulness for our contemporary struggles and debates.
